Distributing Shoes in Southern Gaza

On October 15, 2024, volunteers working with Watan (dba We Will Return) spent the day walking through southern Gaza, delivering orthopedic sandals to displaced people living in tents. Funded by WWR donors, the effort focused on a simple but meaningful task—getting the right shoes to people who need them.

One of the recipients, Mustafa Hallas, lives with a foot disability. He sat outside his shelter as the volunteer handed him a high-quality orthopedic sandal. “I thank everyone who helped,” he said, grateful for something that many take for granted: a sandal that fits, supports, and makes daily movement less painful.

In total, the volunteer distributed sandals sourced from local markets, checking sizes and adjusting pairs to meet people’s physical needs. The work was quiet, intentional, and personal. No announcements, no crowds—just direct help, funded by those who gave.

The need is widespread. Many of the displaced are walking across rough ground with little or no footwear. Some use prosthetic limbs, others are recovering from injuries, and many are simply trying to keep their families safe and moving. Providing a good pair of shoes isn’t a full solution, but it’s a step toward restoring some stability and care.

This kind of work—small, local, and specific—is at the heart of Watan’s approach. The shoes were purchased with WWR donor funds and delivered by people already in the community, who understand the urgency and the context. No overhead, no press. Just presence. 

One pair at a time, needs are being met. And people are being reminded they’re not alone.
