Gathering Around the Essentials: Food Parcels in the Tent City

In a quiet corner of a tent community, rows of families line up under open sky. The dust rises gently as volunteers begin distributing parcels—no fanfare, just steady hands and shared understanding. Inside each package basic necessities such as potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, (and other vegetables available), sardines, and tinned foods, cooking oil, and flour. We have prepared many parcels and each time the content differs depending on what is available.​

These items might seem simple on paper, but here, they represent stability. They offer the ability to prepare a full meal—fresh produce for stews or salads, sardines for protein, oil and flour for flatbreads or frying. For families without kitchens or consistent access to markets, this food allows a sense of normal routine in a setting that’s anything but.

There’s a rhythm to the process. Children help carry bags. A few elders watch from chairs outside their tents. Conversations are soft, a mix of gratitude and resilience. Everyone knows this isn’t a long-term solution—but it matters today.

This kind of food support doesn’t solve everything, but it does something meaningful: it affirms dignity, reinforces care, and strengthens community bonds, even in displacement.
