In January 2024, Israel accused United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff of being involved in the October 7, 2023, terror attacks, but provided no evidence to support these serious claims. An independent review conducted by the UN Secretary-General found no evidence that any UNRWA staff participated in these attacks. The review confirmed that UNRWA has strong systems in place to ensure neutrality in its operations (Amnesty International USA, HRW). Senator Murphy and Congress must act now to restore funding to UNRWA and halt arms sales to Israel. The review showed that UNRWA's vetting process is more rigorous than many other humanitarian organizations. Despite submitting staff lists to Israel since 2011 without any prior concerns, the U.S. and the EU suspended $450 million in funding based solely on unfounded accusations (HRW). This decision impacts not only Gaza but also Palestinian refugees in the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, who depend on UNRWA services. The cruelty of defunding UNRWA without evidence reflects deep-seated racism and unfair treatment. Congress must reverse this action, refund UNRWA, and stop arming Israel to support peace and justice (Amnesty International USA, HRW).
